using reflect

I have 2 Dell computers 1 Dell GX240 and the other Dell Dimension 2400, all I can afford, ie free. one has Windows XP Professional and Microsoft Office 2003 both have been validated and fully updated from the Windows update site. The second machine has a WD Caviar blue 250gb sata hdd which I cleaned with Killdisc. Both machines have Windows XP Professional licence stickers. here's the rub. Can I use Reflect to copy a mirror image of the first drive on to the second drive using either ethernet cable or usb cable. And will the Windows install object to finding itself in completely new surroundings. One more, Will the license on the second machine cover the Windows install?

Thanks for the reply Claptonman, I also need to know which cable is the best to use. Ethernet or usb? I don't want to spend my holidays waiting. the active computer has 1.8ghz cpu with 512mb ram. Not sure of the 2400 as has had no hard drive in it since I got it but has 2gb ddr400 ram. hoping for at least 2+ghz cpu. 3 would be better.

So you have windows on one machine and hard drive, and want to transfer windows to the 250GB WD? Plug the empty 250GB into the computer with windows on it. Clone it and transfer the image to the empty hard drive.

I've used Paragon's drive copy free with good results.

You won't be able to clone the drive from one system and put it in another system and expect it to boot up as it has different hardware from the original system.

What you will need to do is find someone who has a dell xp install cd and use the key thats on the other system, if it requires it. Dells are usually preactivated once the OS is installed.

*Slap* That's what I get for being on the forums at 4am. Yeah, it would have a different motherboard so it would not boot.

Claptonman, that's what I meant when I said "would the Windows Install object to finding itself in different surroundings"? In terms that a person with an iq of 65 can understand, explain, please, how do I get the clone to work in the new hardware environment? the case I am going to be using has a license key sticker for Windows XP Professional and I am trying now to buy a full set of Dell discs ie recovery etc 4 of them and a DTV card to boot. Cheers

Theres a limiting factor on the dimension 2400, supports 400 and 533 fsb cpus, so fastest you can go is a 3.06 ghz pentium 4. Probably wont see night and day performance out of it, i used to deal with that very chip, and it was a dog...i wanted to take it out back and shoot it :/
