i meant to put do i have to use a 64 bit OS -_- . . .im building a new system. i bought a Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 Wolfdale 3.16GHz CPU and am just realizing it says it supports 64-bit. the word "support" hints to me that I can use a 64-bit operating system if I want, but dont have to. someone please clear this up for me. also, am i an idiot for buying this processor and not using a 64-bit OS?

would NOT running a 64bit OS be putting myself at a big disadvantage?

I don't think it would. If you want to fully utilize 4GB or greater of RAM, then you would want to run a 64 bit OS. I mean, there are a number of other factors for running a 64 bit OS that I don't fully understand, but that's the basic advantage to the common computer user. Using a 64 bit OS will allow you to use more RAM.

You can use 32 or 64 bit. I recommend 64-bit and despite what people try to tell you there is compatibility with so much stuff that it's not a hardship to switch to 64-bit o/s

64-bit leaves you open to more utilizable ram. I've been using 64-bit o/s for several years and they are fine.
