v.90 modem is faster than v.92 modem ???

Hi folks,

I use dialup, always get 49.2 kps connection. Ever since I switch computer (from Pentium III 733MHZ to Pentium IV 3.2 GHZ), my internet surfing speed seems to be slower than it was. I understand computer speed has little to do with internet connection. But with my old computer, internet surfing was smoother. So this comes down to the question whether my new v.92 modem is any better (or worst) than my old v.90 modem. Also I have this McAfee Firewall Plus installed on my computer. Could it be a factor? Maybe it has something to do with the way my modem is setup?

Can someone give some tips to faster web surfing on dialup?
 
did you switch modems completely? or just switch drivers? if you go a completely new modem then its probably just simply not as good as the older one, sometimes they are like that, you just have to experiement..a little info about v.92 can be found at this address http://compnetworking.about.com/library/weekly/aa112100a.htm

another thing you might want to check is does your ISP even support v.92? also the quality of your phone lines affect speed more than anything, but i doubt the quality has changed in such a short period of time.

Yes, this is a brand new modem came with the CD installation driver. I bought it because I wanted to take advantage of this v.92 technology which would enable me to use this "internet call waiting" feature. I even spoke with my ISP whether or not their server supports it. The guy's response was: Let me know if it works. So I wasn't sure whether it was because my new modem suck, or it was the fault of their server.

Man, I even increased the cache size in Internet Explorer to allow more space for temp files.

My computer is really not bad, consider

Intel Pentium Processor 640, 3.2 Ghz w/ HT
2.5 Gig DDR2 533 Mhz memory
80 Gig HD, 7200 rpm
128 MB video memory
