Varying Bandwidth

I have a cable modem and I noticed when I do a bandwidth test, it varies significantly. In three tries less than 30 seconds apart it went from 450kbps to 1878kbps back down to 820 kbps...
Any idea what's going on?

Thanks,
John

are you using any program that requires the internet in the background, as that could affect it, i did a test on my internet yesterday because it was just soo slow, it told me it was 56kbps, then i realised i had azureus running

As lee said, it could be effected by other programs using the internet, or other computers on your network. But if thats not the problem, some cable internet gets affected by what people do down the street, say someone is downloading some large files, then your speed will be effected.

Basically backing up what geoff said, if you have cable, or even a cheapo DSL line, then you dont get a sustained line, you get subscribed to a DSL "pool", this pool will have say a 90Mb/s connection coming into it, theneveryone in that pool will share that conection, so if a few people are downloading or streaming then your conenction will suffer.

And incase your wondering now, yes its theoreticlaly possible to get a 90Mb/s connectio to your house if you were to locate and sabotage eveyone elses connections.... theoretically.
