Sounds like a failing GPU OR a bad cable. What you are describing is called artifacting and is most likely caused by a failing GPU. If the cable were going bad the screen would change colors or get a distorted picture, however it is possible that the cable is causing this problem. Do they occur after opening and closing the lid? I'd recommend leaving it open and seeing if the lines appear, if they do it's most certainly a failing GPU.
