Very Slow Boot times.

I have windows XP pro and recently have experienced very slow boot times. Everything loads at normal boot times except when it has that ASCII bar on the bottom of the screen going from left to right. It does that at normal speed and when it gets to the end it just hangs for 18 minutes. Eventually the machine loads windows completely and while using windows everything is running at normal speed. I have searched my computer for any virus or spy ware programs. Defragged the HD. Defragged the boot files. Any suggestions on what it may be. Thanks
 
another thing i find that helps a lot it to clean up your desktop. take everything you dont need off
