Very slow boot-up time

My computer has a problem with loading. When I start the computer, the system loads, slightly slow but normal enough, until the XP desktop pops up. I then have my desktop but without icons, and the computer can't really do much at his point. I computer just sits there and doesn't seem to be prosessing anything. After about 4-5 minutes, the icons suddenly appear and the internet connection loads up along with some other programs. After this the computer is just fine.

Can this be fixed? I don't know why this happens.

go to start run and type in msconfig....select diagnostic startup and then restart the computer. if it comes up quick, i would go back to msconfig and look at the startup and services tab and see what can be disabled at startup. start with this stuff.

I did the diognostic startup and it worked just fine. But then I did the selective startup, I took out everything I could, and it did the lag thingy again. I don't understand it. Anything else I can do?

In Folder options un-check the "automatic search for NETWORK DRIVES/PRINTERS". Disable RPC and RDC. And do a VIRUS and SPAM check.

Didn't seem to do much. I'm pretty sure its not a virus, I have ad-aware, microsoft anti-spyware, spybot plus Norton virus scanner. I found nothing.

I just don't know why a computer would idle itself and then suddenly come back to life. Whatever, thanks for your help guys.

Goto System Tools do a disk cleanup and a defrag, you said you had done a Adaware scan and Virus Scan? Try turning off some/all apperance options. My old computer used to do it all the time becuase the hardrive was packed so I formatted it, Dont go there just yet.

I already tried both of those before I posted. I seems to be that the comouter desides to do NOTHING for a few minutes at startup. It isn't working on loading or processing, it just wants to wait. For no apparent reason. :(
It runs pretty fast once it gets on all the way though.

well, my computer actually did this too, and it was the printer connected to the computer that caused it. go figure.....diconnect the printer and uninstall it....worth a shot.

well, I fixed it... partially.
Actually, I went back to selective startup and found 2 more things I had missed, they had sort of strange looking file names (the first time I was scared of messing up system32 and WINNT stuff). So, I switched em off and the computer turns on great now. But there still is the problem of internet. The icons come on and the computer is processing full speed, but the internet is doing the lag thing still... It waits a few minutes before it pops open. Not as bad though, I think I can live with it.
Anyway, thanks for your help guys!

Do you have HijackThis? open it and go to the "Misc Tools Section" button, then click the "Generate Startup List log" button and post the contents of the log. :)

just press CTRL+ALT+DEL in Windows Task Manager, Application/Process you will find if the process/ application working properly or not, or you can shut it down

Programs like NORTON, etc, do an AUTOMATIC search for updates. This starts before your icons are displayed. If you have multiple-programs all doing the same thing, it can take for ever at start-up. Try disabling some of thes programs.
