Very Slow Computer

Maybe it would be easier to note just the categories I should leave alone? Or are they all about the same risk?

missing shared dlls
unused file extensions
activex and class issues
type libraries
applications
application paths
help files
installer
obsolete software
run at startup
start menu ordering
mui cache

It's running about the same, startup still takes awhile (I stopped most unimportant services in msconfig, but maybe I missed some.)

Then it sounds like it's time for a fresh install of the operating system, especially if you haven't done one in the last few years. But my advice to you would be to buy a another hard drive and use it as primary and install windows to it and then use the old drive as extra storage, you can delete all non essential folders and files after windows is all setup on new drive, which means everything under the windows folders and program files since all programs would have to be reinstalled anyway.

One more test you can do. Since this system is over 6 years old, you may want to download the hard drive makers disk diagnostic utility and and run a test on the hard drive, it may be slowing down or having issues.

Well, I decided to leave the registry alone. From what I have read, cleaning it will not provide a significant performance improvement.

I cleaned up some space and defragmented. Still slow. However, the overall slowness is typical of a machine this age with all the software issues. What is unusual is Firefox and Outlook Express.

Firefox (and IE6) have a slow startup. It appears to be due to temp files because I can sometimes get a near instant startup after cleaning, though I can't speed it up on demand and it does not last long.

The Outlook Express issue is more troubling as nothing I do ever speeds it up. It is mainly only slower than normal when receiving messages. The initial connecting, and the downloading messages part are at normal speeds. It is only the process of downloading the message list itself that is very slow (even if there are no messages).

turn off system restore (so he can delete old restores) and turn him back on (so you can free up some space too)
then open my computer and right click your C: drive and click properties.
untick the option "Allow indexing to index this disk for fast searching" and click apply
any error that he give yoou just click ignore and in the end click OK.
Hope that helps

I would think it might be time to think about doing a fresh install. I know it is very time comsuming, but it sure makes a difference and it is only 3 or 4 hours on a slow weekend and you probably only need to do it like once a year. And, it is even less time if you take the opportunities to back up all your work.

Good luck

Do u have more than two anti viruses on ur comp..if u do take one off.

Another thing you can try is del some unwanted programs. .

Go through your startup and see if there are any programs you dont need.

This thread is over a month old. Please check last post date before replying. Most likely the user has fixed the issue or reformatted.

Haven't really fixed it, but since I plan to get a new computer in about a year, I can tolerate it. I did manage to free up a lot of space. Anyway, I'm not going to work on it anymore. (None of the other computer users here have the patience for a reinstall.) I've solved it as much as I'm going to solve it; thanks for all the help everyone. :)

This thread is finished, no need to post anymore in this thread.

Sir,

Run a freeware program called ccleaner. Run adaware. Turn off anti virus, disable, trash. Just not needed with isp, browser and Windows doing it all anyway. Been running naked for two years now, no issues even with extensive use and browsing with merry abandon.

Your compter will revel in its new freedom.

This is a very important step to speed up computer. Windows registry is just like a database which stores all the computer information. Every time you install a program, save a files or install a new driver on your computer, the registry keeps a record which called entry, these entries will be left in the registry even the related programs/files/drivers/ were removed thus make them obsolete even corrupted. That is the biggest reason for a slow running computer, if you keep ignoring these wasted entries, error messages might pop up from time to time and even crash your computer eventually.
