very slow pc performance please help

I'm experiencing some very slow performance and can't figure out why. I have windows XP.

Some sites load extremely slow, even the simplest pages sometimes take several minutes. They don't show there loading on the % bar either, and I can not exit them while there loading, I have to wait until it gets 100%. Even hotmail takes 5 or 6 minutes to get into :(

Then some sites load fine and speedy as usual and show progress as there loading, and those ones let me exit while they load if I choose to. Ive cleaned out old files and compressed the others. I've also checked for viruses and spywear. I did a cache clean as well. Nothing seems to be helping.

I dont know about overheating because it acts the same weather I've been useing a while or just boot up fresh after the pc sat off for 2 days.

I've done countless scans over the past 2 weeks with 2 different virus programs and ad aware, did fresh scans again today and deleted spyware etc. none of it has helped.

Sites I frequent used to load mint, now dog sloooooooooooooooow. I can go to the next and its super fast as normal. Its consistant F&^%ed up behavior and I'm at a loss. I need this for school and cant afford a new pc right now.

What about resetting registry keys? Someone mentioned that to me but I have no clue even as to what they do or how to reset them.

I have no idea how much ram it has.

I took the sides off and cleaned the fan/vents too just incase. It was'nt that dusty in there.

Could it have something to do with windows? I noticed the little windows flag in the top corner doesnt move either, when I enter slow to load sites.

thanks for posting.

go to start, right click my computer, hit properties, and look on the screen neer the ok for how much ram.

It does'nt tell me in there, just has task bar and something for the start menu.

The computor was'nt slow before this problem, so it must have decent ram. Should be even faster now since i deleted about 90% files, and ones i kept are all small.

Yesterday I cleaned cache (again)
compressed files I still have (again)
did a spybot scan and deleted spyware and cookies, (again)
also scanned with ad aware, (again
norton scanned, (again)

the problem persists.

so wtf

I feel like throwing it out the window right now

I think all is ok now, no thanks to avg or mcphee anti-virus. I tried both, one at a time (both fully updated) and both failed to detect a virus. I got norton anti virus today and it found and squashed a bug. My pc seems to be working perfect so far and running fast like it used to :D:D:D
