Very strange prblem

hi folks

i just bought a secondhand computer off eBay and its all good except for one weird annoying problem. I know a little about computers but i have no idea what this problem is.

I was d/l a driver for a usb WI-fi adapter when all of a sudden the revolution of the screen went full like a magnify glass was over it, so i restarted the computer and it went away. And another time i was tweaking my vista by changing some settings then bang the screen went huge like it was magnified. Once i restart it a message comes up saying that the computer recovered from a bad shutdown.

do you guys have any idea whats happening here? and hot to fix it? i was wondering if its a software problem that could be fixed if i reload windows? or is it a hardware problem that im stuck with?

thanks!

Sounds like an issue with the video driver. Whats the make and model of pc and operating system? Or if its a custom built pc, what motherboard/video card does it have?

its a Optiplex 745 with a Intel Core 2 Duo at 1.80 GHz, 2.00GB of RAM, 80GB HDD and 32-bit Operating System which now is Vista.

Its a Dell

so whats the best way to find out what video card i have? and what mother board i have?

thanks

ok the mother board is: Dell inc 2.6.4

the integrated video is Intel (R) Q965/Q963 Express Chip set Family

Whoops!!1

well before i got your post, i went to dell's website and clicked the button that scans your computer for drivers that need updated. have i made a mistake? one was an audio one, the other was a chip set one i think, cant remember the third one. but yeah i was looking for a video card update but none showed up, so i ran a file that had the scary exe suspension but i figured that it should be ok as its a trusted site ie dell. now im worried that i made a mistake as you told me to go to Intel's site. so the reason why im worried i guess is because i went to your link but the scanner thing wouldn't do it. it just told me i need the secure ActiveX/Java browser d/l but i read that windows computers already have it installed. so what have i done! heheh should i just d/l the ActiveX thing? and if so can you give me a link?

thanks alot!

The link for intel requires that you install an addon that will allow the tool to run. I would assume you are running Internet explorer? Just click on the bar up top and allow it to install.

done, but the only driver that i could d/l was the chip set one. the graphics one didnt have a new one to instal, is this normal?

Thanks heaps!

this is what it said:

A customized computer manufacturer driver is installed on your computer. The Intel Driver Update Utility is not able to update the driver. Installing a generic Intel driver instead of the customized computer manufacturer driver may cause technical issues. Contact your computer manufacturer for the latest driver for your computer.

so do i just go ahead and d/l it?

The only problem I see is that dell don't have the chipset drivers for vista, the chipset driver also includes the video driver.

well i noticed in device manager that there were two chip sets for graphics and i noticed in the resolution page under personalize that there were two displays one all the way down in resolution to all the way up in resolution, so i disabled one. looks like i fixed the problem. so is it normal to have two graphics things?

Thanks
