Vga, dvi, hdmi ?

My motherboard has VGA, DVI and HDMI connectors. The monitor I currently use has only VGA connection; eventually I will upgrade to a better/larger monitor. It seems most new monitors today have DVI and HDMI connections, so I'm wondering which is better? Is one better for games? Or is it just a matter of preference?

FWIW, out of curiosity I recently hooked a spare TV to my PC thru the HDMI; good picture, but monitor was just physically too big for my desk.
 
You won't notice a difference between HDMI and DVI, both are good up to 2560x1600, at that point you want to switch to DisplayPort.
