VGA to S-Video

I am looking to connect my laptop to a TV. The TV has the basic video cables, with the most advanced being the S-Video. However, my laptop has no S-Video, only a VGA output. Can someone suggest a cord to "translate" this? I already have S-Video cables and VGA cables, just no VGA-to-S-Video cable.

It's not possible unless your video card supports. Many DO NOT support it. You'll need an actual converter seeing as Svideo is 720x480 interlaced and VGA is a much higher resolution, non-interlaced.

Can you recommend one? I actually just found that I have an S-Video port on my video card in my desktop. Will this work? If so, I'll need an extension cord or a really long S-Video cord. Recommendations?

My desktop card has S-Video, and is Geforce 8800 GT. My laptop lacks an S-Video, only has VGA. It is ATI Mobility Radeon X1300.

If none of those work, can you recommend a cheap VGA to SVideo/Component converter?

Anyway, I checked. My S-Video does display on the TV. It's just a matter of it being too short, so I will buy a long S-Video cord and also a VGA to S-Video cord just in case.

Also, I need to somehow connect the audio. I have an SPDIF output port on my MOBO. Can that be connected to the TV via RCA?

Yeah, you just need a cable or converter. Just go to a place like radio shack and they sell the converters for a few bucks.

And no, SPDIF is digital audio and RCA is analog. You'll need something like headphone to RCA. They can also be purchased from radio shack.

Can you give me the technical name for it? Is it 3.5mm to RCA?

Yeah... I'm sure if you go to Radio Shack and ask 3.5mm to RCA or headphone to RCA, they'd know what you're referring to.

Standard Definition I presume? If so, I wouldn't waste my time. The quality will most likely be horrible.

Nah, quality was pretty good when I connected it with my short SVideo cord. But no, it's not an HDTV. I don't know about sound, though. I guess I can always find a wireless mouse somewhere and adjust the audio with it in the actual computer.

I had a Sony 36" Wega CRT TV which was one of the best CRT type TVs at the time.
Everything looked incredible on that TV except for a PC signal through the S video input.
mOnk3ys1ms is right, it will look horrible.

No, I'm telling you I already hooked it up through S-Video. The regular PC signal did look bad, but when the movie ran it was very good since obviously running a movie does not require the precision of a monitor, but viewing the desktop does. Sometimes, movie files even appear in low quality on a monitor because a monitor is almost "too" precise.
