VHD Nightmare!!! Help!

Hello, all,

I recently upgraded my operating system on my HP laptop to Windows 7. Before doing so, I used a thumb drive to save important files. I then made a copy of the files on 2 disks. I wiped the laptop hard drive, installed Windows 7, put in the disks to install my files, and guess what? They are now VHD files, are not recognized and cannot be opened. HUH?

I have been all over the net trying to find out how to open these files, and have seen lots of VERY confusing info that does not work, or would clear the data off of the disks. Why does this happen? I especially need my Sony Recorder voice files. I have seen stuff like "open it with your Virtual Machine Program!", but even search finds nothing. I am tearing my hair out! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the response, Canivari.

I downloaded the D-Attach program and installed it. It opens a blank box with tabs at the top, including the attach tab. I put my VHD disk in, opened it, and selected an item. When I right click on it, I am offered:

Open
Add to archive...
Add to Windowsimagebackup.RAR
Compress + email
Compress to Windowsimagebackup.RAR + email
Scan with AVG
Copy
Properties

No attach is offered. It wouldn't allow me to drag and drop a file to D-Attach. I tried to select Add to Windowsimagebackup.RAR, and received "cannot create windowsimagebackup.RAR and Access Denied.

I went to D-Attach, and the files just appeared in the D-Attach box. I clicked on the first one, clicked attach, and it replied: cannot open file, native error 5.

I tried different VHD files, each time getting the last result.

I am dead in the water at this point. Any ideas?

Thanks again,

-Click open
-Click in the button that says atach.

-Go to my computer
-you should have now a new (HDD there),open it.
-copy everything that you need from there a put it in another HDD.
-In the end of copying everything that you need rom the VHD,maximazise
the program again and click detach.
-Close the program.
-That is it.
