Vid card performance

I have an hp pavilion a350n desktop that came with a geforce 4 mx440 (comps about 2 yrs old) and was told it would last me a few years, which turned out to not be true since I played some games that got about 10 fps:o . I have since learned that my next computer will be built by me. Anyway, I put in a radeon 9800 pro 256 about a year ago in the AGP slot since the cheap a$$ mobo didnt come with PCIe (could of gotten a much better card for the same price if it did:( ). I had to use the adapter to separate the power cable to my HD because my psu didnt have a separate slot for a graphics card power cable (more cheap crap). I have noticed that when the fan turns on (on the vid card) the entire computer locks up for about 3 seconds and I get a lot of crashes in games, which pi$$es me off. Also, the entire computer performs kinda shitty, and I was wondering if is all the PSU's fault. I heard somewhere that these crashes and such were cause by inadequite power.

First off, the MX440 was junk when it first came out around 2001-02. Don't beleive salesmen :P 2nd, I think you're pretty lucky to have AGP on this "cheap" computer. 2 years ago, they didn't even have PCI Express!

I don't know the power requirments of the 9800 right off, but your power supply is probably too weak. Oh, and duh... Windows Vista Beta...

well, I mean I played the games on xp and they still crash. Vista, on the other hand, is not as good for games. bf2 glitches and theres triangles all over the menu, when your in the game its fine tho, but i cant play online. Anway, i think that psu that came with it is 300 watts or something. Ill take your word about my psu tho, because thats what i am thinking is causing these problems. thanks for the help!
