Video and Onboard video at the same time

I was wondering can you use the Onboard video and a video card at the same time? Basically I want to keep my monitor hooked up my onboard video and hook my tv up to my video card, can I do this without having to shut one of them down each time?
 
Only if they are using different buses. If onboard is AGP, your other card must be PCI. Now I've never tried it, but you MIGHT be able to use two PCI-Express GPUs at once(on and off-board). I guess that would really depend on the motherboard
 
Some Asrock motherboards allows you to use an AGP as well as a PCI-E card at the same time provided that you have an ASrock board that sports both. The only benefit of running two PCI cards would be for dual screen, it will not increase performance in any way, you would have to get a SLi or crossfire rig for that.
