Video/Audio Playback Problems on Laptop

Hello,

I have an ASUS UL80VT and when I try to watch videos or listen to music (either youtube or off my harddrive), the media will skip. On VLC or Media Player Classic, the video player will skip frames or become pixel-y. On iTunes or Windows Media Player, the music will stutter.

Another issue that I have is that my Skype has slowed down tremendously. On start up, it'll slow down my whole entire computer and take five minutes to load before I can actually use it--Not sure if that relates to my playback issues.

I was hoping someone would be able to help me solve these problems. Any help would be very much appreciated.

Thank you,

Alex

It could be a number of issues. The laptop is showing signs of very slow speed. It could be malware, a full hdd, very badly defragged hdd, out of control processes, memory problems, software conflicts and other hardware issues.

Check Task Manager to see if there are any processes that are not your current app but using large amounts of CPU. I would then check for malware and hdd issues.

Thank you for your reply.

I normally don't have large applications running in the background. My harddrive is partitioned into two drives with 20 GB free on C and 40 GB free on D, both of which have gone through the disk defragmenter.

I've scanned using Ad-Aware and Search and Destroy and my school provides me with Symantec Endpoint Protection as my anti-virus.

Can you think of anything else that may be an issue?

Thank you again.

I wasn't asking if you normally run large applications in the background, I was asking if there were any running (that you did not start yourself). It sounds as though the PC is generally in good shape. Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D are a bit long in the tooth these days. Many folk here run Malwarebytes.

Do you have any hdd utilities that show performance problems like WD Diagnostics or what is appropriate to your drives? I'll leave the hardware side for others to comment. You could post more details about your PC and OS.

Well, try reintall the VLC or Media Player Classic, and what's the formats your video/audio is? What's the sourse it?

I don't have any applications running in the background that are eating up CPU. I'll download Malwarebytes and get back to you.

I don't have any utilities like that but I'll check out WD Diagnostics.

Here is some information on my PC:

CPU Type: Intel Core 2 Duo
CPU Speed: SU7300(1.30GHz)
Chipset: Intel GS45
Operating System: Windows 7 Home Premium
GPU/VPU: NVIDIA GeForce G210M + Intel GMA 4500MHD
Video Memory: NVIDIA GeForce G210M 512MB DDR3 VRAM + Intel GMA 4500MHD (Switchable VGA)
HDD: 320 GB
Memory: 4 GB DDR3

Well, try reintall the VLC or Media Player Classic, and what's the formats your video/audio is? What's the sourse it?

I already tried reinstalling VLC and Media Player Classic but I still have the problem. The formats include .MP4, .AVI, and .MKV for video and .MP3 for audio. Hope that helps.

Thank you again for all the help. Hopefully this problem will get resolved soon.

Are there any other issues with programs running slowly? It's difficult to tell if you have one common issue or several separate ones.

Playing music smoothly does not need a lot of cpu. Even the videos should not be hard for your laptop. I suppose all your issues have audio involved to some extent, even Skype. VLC comes with all its drivers including audio so they should be OK.

You could take a look in Device Manager for any obvious errors, especially the sound and video items.

No rush to respond to the above. It can wait until you are sure you have no malware.

Typically, my programs don't run slowly unless I have too many open. Sometimes my heavier applications (chrome, itunes) will stop responding but it doesn't happen all that often.

I did a quick scan with Malwarebytes and had no malware and then I followed up with a full scan on both partitions and still found no problems.

I went over Device Manager and "scanned for hardware changes" and then went through sound and video to update the driver software. All of it was already up to date.

I can run numerous applications on my old PC that's nowhere close to yours' performance. Chrome uses a lot more memory than Firefox but it's not what I would call a heavy application.

Is your page file adequate? Lots of guides on the Internet setting up PC basics including that. Is your indicated RAM (My Computer/Properties) as expected?

If your HDDs check out OK with a diagnostic program you could run tests on your RAM.

You could try disabling your real-time AV protection (and Tea Timer if you are running that with Spybot S&D) to see if that makes a difference. I don't know if Symantec Endpoint Protection shows you when it is scanning in real-time. If not check in Task Manager when you are having a slow-down.

I got rid of Ad-aware a long time ago. I don't run Tea Timer but I do occasional scans with Spybot S&D.

You can also look at the Performance graphs and system usages in Task Manager to see what is going on with CPU and page file.
