Video (.avi) Joining software???

Hello,
What do you guys/gals recommend as a good (and simple) program to join avi (or other video media) files. I dont want to join them into a dvd - just join them into one file.

What about Movie Maker? It comes free with Windows. It's basic, but for basics it's descent.

Or are you looking for a full-scale video editing program?

And to anyone out there, can he join .avi files without having to render the whole thing - which can take some time?
