Video Card Advice?

Hey guys/ gals,

I'm in the middle of building my new Desktop. At first i had my mind set on two GTX560Ti (wanting to run triple monitor 3D style). Then as i researched, i realized i wouldn't get that much performance out of them. I mean they would produce some good graphics, but nearly as good as two GTX580's would. Those things are beasts.

Then Radeon had to go and screw that idea up for me. Two GTX580 cards would cost me approx $1200. As far as i know 2 GTX580 3GB would only give me 3GB. Something to do with splitting the memory ( forget where i seen this). Anyway, is this true?

The Radeon 7970 is the card i am looking at. From what i see, this card will kick two GTX580's out of the water. NO?

Let me know what your opinions are and some research backing your opinion if possible.

Thanks :)

I think 2 580s are faster than a single 7970. But 2 7970s would be the fastest dual-card setup. And I do not think it will split the memory, as you said. 3GB is plenty for 3 monitors.

Hmmmm.... ill have to look up where i seen that. Thinking it was on newegg... i'll try and find it where i seen that it said that two GTX580 split the memory.

Not sure if i want to go as far as two 7970

Yeah, well, 2 560tis are more powerful than a 580, and a 7970 is also more powerful, so the performance of 2 560tis and 7970 might be close, and since 7970 has eyefinity, then it is capable of running 3 monitors. And then, in the future, you can always add another one, if you choose.

The cards in SLI or CF, the memory isnt split. Each card has its own memory and doesnt split it with the other card. Each card receives the same data, but each card only has to render half of it. Thats where the performance gain comes in.

GTX 560 SLI mode is good and powerful. You can have quad monitor with this video card in SLI mode if you have 3rd video card that is different from SLI video card.

here is good information link about SLI video card.
http://sli.nvidia.com/object/sli_multi_monitor.html

Single GTX 560 is good enough for all of computer game except BF3 recommended SLI GTX 560 if want highest framerate.

Ya i'm not sure where i seen that, maybe i just misread it. Thanks for the info.

560's are going to be outdated and not good enough in a few years. So i'm not really looking to stick in "just a good enough" type of card in. That's why i am aiming so high.

I'm actually leaning towards the 7970. Like you said you could always add another in the future. And two of those beasts would be unreal.

If you can afford it the 7990 should be out around or before the 790 is out, and it would prob be smart to look at the GTX700's before dropping that much

I can see how someone might explain it that way. Since both cards memory has the same data, it doesnt double the amount of memory or split the data between the cards either though.

I would look into getting an ati Radeon HD 6990.

At this point, a waste of money. A 7970 gets close to it sometimes on way less power. Then later on you could get another 7970 when prices drop. Or even wait for the 7950, then CF them later.
