Video card damage?

Several months ago I was playing a game (which I had played many times before) on my gaming PC when I suddenly started having display problems. I don't remember exactly what began happening, but I believe some flickering was involved. I decided to restart, and then loaded up the game again. This time, it worked for a while, then the computer crashed. I don't remember what error messages were received or anything, but from that point on I could not boot up the computer.

I finally decided to try working on it and got it up and running today. On the initial boot screen, however (when it shows IDE...Master/Slave etc), vertical broken yellow lines appear and will fade in and out. Some of the text will fade from being randomly capitalized (i.e., "IdE ChaNnEl") back to normal on the boot screens as well.

Once the Windows XP loading screen shows up, the lines and other problems go away, aside from a slightly discolored haze that seems to consist of a repeated series of boxes running vertically.

I have reformatted everything and once I began installing the drivers, I found another problem. The computer would not boot up after installing the video card driver (I would have to go back to "last known good configuration" to get the computer to boot).

When I drag a window in XP, it has a very noticeable delay before it moves. Also, when scrolling down on Internet Explorer windows, it takes a second or two to load up the newly revealed portion of the window. This computer, by the way, is 3.0ghz with 1gb of ram.

Are these all signs that the videocard is dead? Or could there also be other problems with the computer? I am probably going to be buying a new card but I want to know if anything else could be wrong before I start spending money to repair it.

Thanks

nope my computer an my dads computer both did that until we installed video card drivers but u said u had a problem with your drivers u have so go an download the latesed drivers if u dont know how to do that just send a reply saying so an your video card model(e.g ATI 3870)

Typically that's a VGA problem, yes. Either defective RAM on it or a defective GPU. Did you check to see if the fan on the card is working? It sounds like it's too late now, but you might still want to check. I had a 9700 Pro and 9800 Pro do that to me.

Do you have a spare card that you could try in the computer?

Does your motherboard have onboard graphics, if so, you could try them out and see if any of the problems persits, if they don't, you know it's the graphics card.

I assume it does not have onboard graphics since I have no way of plugging in the monitor without the card.

I'm trying to borrow a friend's spare graphics card. I'll probably just test it with that in order to settle the issue.

I appreciate the help.

Yeah, if there isn't anywhere to plug it in, there won't be onboard...

Ok sure, let us know how it goes! ;)
