video card died? why?

I have been in the market for a new video card and havn't made up my mind yet. I installed COD and ran it for a while until I got artifacting and quit but not before the card overheated and melted the plastic around the heatsink and froze the fan. The card is now dead, I installed another card and all I got was a black screen.
The dead card is a MSI FX5700le. Isn't the card supposed to shut down before melting? How do I prevent this from happening to a new $300 card. How can I even install a new card if all I get is a black screen?
Is it possible I have a fried mobo also?

if there was an internal fault in the card there's no knowing how its gonna react to that state. its fairly reasonable to assume that it could melt itself due to the fault.
i doubt it would happen to a brand new card but if it happens to a new card you can RMA it so the only problem you have is waiting for a new card to arrive.
also, seeing as you new card doesn't display anything its a reasonable assumtion that the motherboard has been damaged in some way; however before you buy a new board i would try to reseat the graphics and ram modules to see if that solves the blank screen issues

Maybe if it was a overheating issue but I dont think that it is, the card itself could just be bad and you need to return it or your mobo owuld be bad now, you may have shocked something without relizeing it when instaliing it if you weren't grounded

The vid crd was installed and running for over a year. I did not install anything. Also I just tried to reinstall the video card and it now works but no fan. Temps all seem to be fine. Seems the reseating worked. Just can't run long now because no fan on vid crd. I am assuming the mobo is ok and ram is ok as it runs now. New video card here I come.

Cards dont shut down, CPUs shutdown. At most, the card will throttle

By keeping a close eye on the temps as u burn the machine as well as newer cards having proper heatsinks (5700Le is a budget card and the marketing emphasis was to get a flashy card in order to jack prices ... kinda like 5200s shipping with fans ... dont need fans on those cards)

can I even install a new card if all I get is a black screen?
Yer supposed to install it with a black screen

Could be that mobo died and not the VC
