Ok I hope this doesn't start any argument but if it does, hopefully it's at a mature level.

So I was looking at some topics in which people were asking if they're build is any good. I saw one that had an 8600GT and people said that it was just an ok card and would consider getting a better one. I don't know about you, but I would love to have an 8600GT personally. That's just an example though. A lot of people here are gun ho about video cards and think that only high-end video cards will run today's games. That is mostly true but I have an X800XL which is an ok card but not great and it runs CoD4, NFS: Carbon, F.E.A.R. and Madden 08 almost pefectly on medium to high settings running at 1024x768.

Just my opinon though. Comments?
 
The 8600gt is sorta inept. It's around the range of your x800, albeit with S.M. 3.0 and Dx10 support... It's a mid-low range 8 series card. Obviously this isn't the best option, especially when one could spend an extra $150 and get a 8800gt.

I do get what you're saying though. This forum is populated with alot of "enthusiasts", people with high end PC's. Some tend to be quite gung-ho with their recommendations.. But we all do this sometimes, as it's easier to spend someone else's money. There's never doubt that the suggestion aren't good though, and it's up to the OP to tell us what his budget is, so we can help him best. :)
 
It all depends on budget. It is true that 8600GT is not a great gamming card. But if you don't have money, there is no point to argue.
 
I'm not all about having only high end cards or it not being worth it, but having a mid-ranged DX10 card is stupid. Because for the same price you can buy a high end 7 series or X1K series, which is gives much better performance for the money.
 
Still doesn't make alot of sense, no matter how much you say it....

Mid range 8 series = A higher end 7 series card. Plus DX10 gets better frames than dx9 so ha. *I'm not saying a 8600gts equals a 7950gt, someone will try to point that out. /paranoid*
