video card for laptop?

i want to get a Mobility Radeon 9800 for my laptop but dont know if i can or if the computer will allow it, im getting a brand new HP 8510P and am wondering if the videocard is compatable and how hard it would be to put in.

thanks for responses.

From what I can gather, the only video option you have for that laptop is the ATI Mobility Radeon HD2600. As soon as you crack open the case to try to put in the new graphics chip, (IF it is even compatible) you automatically VOID your warranty.

Pretty much all laptops have the graphics card soldered directly onto the motherboard, meaning you cannot upgrade it. So even if you were to buy a mobility version, I don't think you can actually put it in the laptop.

There are very few laptops that let you upgrade the graphics, and I don't think it's possible to desolder the graphics chip, and solder on a new one (if it was, people would've done that by now :)). That laptop may be one of the rare weirdo ones that let you upgrade, but in general, no, you cannot upgrade.

EDIT: I should have looked up the model number BEFORE posting :D

The HP 8510P is indeed one of those weirdo laptops I was talking about, so in THEORY you can upgrade the graphics. It probably has a mini-PCI Express slot inside, which is weird but...good for you (PCI Express is the slot that graphics cards go in). If this is the case, then you SHOULD be able to upgrade.

Yeah, the chances of the lappy having a removeable gpu is very slim!! A number of Voodoo and Alienware lappys have removeable gpu but i think ive seen 2-3 hp's that do..

I have never openned a Dell with a non-solder board, and only 1 sony vaio I've seen was removeable.

U are best off to buy a lappy with the gpu you want or be happy with the original choice.

Get the computer company to upgrade it, if the price is right of course, that way you get to keep you warranty....

And i have to agree with Evilcheesegrater.

Turns out this laptop is one of the few that you CAN upgrade the GPU :D

I've edited my previous post to reflect this.

In theory you can upgrade, but make sure you check for certain that the graphics card you want is supported before spending your hard-earned cash on it.
