video card help

I used to be able to play a couple games and now i can't. When i launch a game, right before the loading screen it will freeze. It will be a black screen and my computer just freezes and i am forced to restart/shutdown. However, some games do work. Its just that my 2 favorite games happen to not work, but freeze. :mad:

The video card i have is NVIDIA Geforce4 MX 4000
I have tried updating the driver but it doesnt do anything.
Is there anything i can do so i can play my games?


If there's nothing i can do, and getting a new video card is the only option, i need some opinions on video cards. I am deciding on these:
-BFG 3DFuzion GeForce 7300 128MB
-ASUS® Extreme GeForce N6200 TC 256MB
-EVGA® GeForce FX5200 128MB AGP

What games are you trying to play? Your graphics card is very old from what I can deduce perhaps your graphics card can't "handle" the games your trying to throw at it.

the graphics cards that you said you were considering are all pretty outdated and or underpowered. you should take a look at the higher end models of the geforce 7-series. what is your video card budget?
 
Getting an better GFX may not help it at all. IF he has an 400MHz computer Geforce7 AGP card then its not gonna help much... And its AGP only...

I don't want to spend much. As you can see i have a Geforce4 Mx 4000 which totally sucks. If i remember way back when, i think i got it for $29.99 or $39.99. I am not an insane gamer. I don't play games every minute of the day. Therefor, i think that a card slightly better than what i have now would be the right choice.

Would it be hard to take a video card out of a laptop?
I was thinking of swapping my video card with one from a laptop.
 
Ok, i just bought a ATI Radeon 9250. I am having a tough time installing it!! I uninstalled my previous gfx card's driver, and i disabled my onboard video. But when i plug my monitor to my Radeon card i get a blank screen and a flashing power button on my monitor. What am i doing wrong???
 
If it required an extra floppy drive connector or an 6 pin connector it wont work... if your power supply is below recommendations.. if you didnt plug it in tight enough... if you didnt ground yourself and you shorted out the video card... or the motherboard... if you bought and DOA card... you video cable isnt secured... your motherboard is 4x and the GFX is 8x...
 
Aren't AGP cards 4x/8x? But yeah, make sure you did all those things that Oscar stated in the post before me, I don't think you could have shorted anything because the machine actually turned on right? Maybe you missed a power connector, or cables arent secure enough..something like that.
 
I forced my computer to boot my radeon pci card. Before it was set to boot the on board graphics first, so thats why i wasn't getting any video. But now i have it installed correctly.

I understand i am supposed to edit some settings in display properties? But i'm unable to turn off my on board video. There are little squares numbers 1 & 2 and i guess i am supposed to make my radeon card "extended." But i can't because the setting is grayed out.

I tried playing the games and it still freezes at the black screen!!! Is there a setting i have to edit so i can play my games!? And i tried playing a game that works and the graphics aren't improved. They still suck.

You need to go into your bios and disable the onboard, if not disable it in Device Manager. Did you install the drivers for the new card, might be a good idea to update your motherboard chipset drivers too. After that if the games still dont work try uninstalling the games and then reinstall them
 
How do you disable the onboard video in a bios? Is there a name for on board video in device manager? I installed the driver for my card. Would it help if i reinstalled the driver?


EDIT: I tried reinstalling the driver but nothing seemed to change.

It should be listed under the integrated section in the bios, you can disable it in the Device Manager in windows too. Since you put a AGP card in from onboard you should update your boards chipset driver for the AGP driver
 
I've checked my bios many times and just checked again to disable onboard, but i cant find it in my bios, nor device manager

If i returned my video card and got another one, would there be a difference? Like would the new video card work better than the exchanged one.

I have switched a few video cards back and forth between 3 computers. I have never gotten so frustrated installing a video card!! I've never even ran into any problems before! I don't think I'll be able to get my radeon 9250 card to work. Do you know much about the EVGA e-GeForce 6200 LE card? Is it worse, about the same, or better than my radeon 9250?
