video card needed for Elder Scrolls 4...

I built my computer last summer, I did not design it for gaming but I really want to play Elder scrolls 4: Oblivon.
I have an AMD Athlon 64 2800, 512 meg ram DDR 400, and a cheap video card.

Would i be able to play Oblivion if i bought a new video card? I can spend about 120 on it, but I did not know which one to get. What would you reccomend? and would it be benefitual to get another 512 of ram and a slightly cheaper video card?

Thanks for your help.

Well these are 2 of the recommened required video cards...ATI X800 series, Nvidia GeForce 6800 series those or any vid card higher then that will do fine and yes the extra 512 ram would be very helpful because although the minimum requirements are just 512... it would be alot better with the extra 512 mb ram...

The Geforce 6600gt is the lowest priced card that would start running Oblivion halfway decent. By this I mean solid medium settings, some stuff on high...it would look good. They go for around $100-$120. IMO the next logical step would be the 6800gs, at around $160, not the vanilla 6800 (around $120-$130) since the 6600gt is very comparable. This is Nvidia cards only, btw.

And yeah, 512 more ram would help a lot. If you only have $120 to spend, I would either: shop around for a very cheap 6600gt or 6800 and stick of 512 ram; OR just buy a 6600gt or 6800...then buy the ram later since Oblivion is definitely playable on 512.

With a 6800gs and 512mb more ram, you would run Oblivion very well, most likely high settings with a few things on medium and some things maxed. Hope this helps.

Also, the 7600GT is a nice card, slighlty better than the 6800GT I beleive! (sp? :D)

Yet even farther out of his price range. the X800GTO with 400mhz core and 70mhz memory is a deal at around $100, praetor uses it on many of his builds in computer specs 101. the extra 512MB of memory is not an option, it is a must.

ok thanks for the help. It will still be a while before i get the money, but i will go for the extra 512, and probably the Geforce 6600gt

thanks again.

IMO the extra 512mb of memory is indeed an option. (yes 1gb is obviously preferred) There is always the option of stopping the explorer.exe process right before you play Oblivion, then turning it back on when you're done. That would help a TON if you only had 512mb of memory.
