It seems the general consensus is that if you purchase a video card, it's primarily because you want to play games right? but I guess the question on my mind is.. is there any other reason why a person would want a good graphics card? If anyones is using a high performance video card or knows a reason why they would purchase one other then playing games  could someone let me know :D

Another use is Folding@Home :P however a more common reason other than gaming would be Video &/or Photo editing, or people that use CAD(Computer Aided Drafting/Design) programs.

On older computers you could really tell a difference when editing photos and stuff with integrated video. I've heard it's gotten better, but I don't know. I haven't got a new computer in years and I prefer to use a gfx card.

For an average user, its pretty pointless. The only difference you may notice is a slight improvement on PC's with low RAM, because integrated only subtracts from what you have. If you edit videos or photos, a moderate DX9 card is a good choice.

watching videos on your computer, especially noticeable if it's done on a large monitor (like 20+ inches) where subtle details are easily seen, might also benefit from a dedicated card...

Thanks for the helpful replies :) Being an novice I think I'll just stick with a cheap video card. It'd be pointless to purchase anything over $75 if all i'm going to be doing is a little bit of amateur home video editing right?

Most people might get graphics card because intergrated eats up system memory so replacing it with a cheap video card with its own dedicated memory frees up system memory.

My compy was using Intergrated and it was very bad,So i just went out and got a graphics card and even thought its not exactly the latest technology it does me great.

Another application is for architectural drafting, or drafting of any kind... Or if you are doing CGI, but the majority of mainstream graphics cards are for gaming, yes.
