Video card question

Could someone please tell me the difference between a Radeon 9600XT 128mb and and Radeon 9600 128MB. Note the XT. I heard somewhere that the XT is better for gaming. And also, is there a difference between the 9600XT and the 9600PRO...and or is there such thing as a Radeon 9600XTPRO...im at an intermediate level in computers, but im new when it comes to video cards, cuz ive never been into gaming or high end multimedia. Thanks for all your time:) And if i can ask...what is recommended for a good gaming card ...AFFORDABLE...PLEASe...i call computer stores and they tell me to buy 700 dollar video cards...i just want something that will play most games, but is affordable...thats why ive been looking on ebay for these 9600's...and ive heard ATI has some of the best graphics cards, even though the 9600 is a little bit old....thanks again for all your time.
 
the 9600XT basically just runs at higher clock speeds than the plain 9600. The XT is better for gaming. A 9800 Pro or 9800XT would be really good for games but if you are realistic with the graphics settings (ie. don't set everything to full just because) a 9600 will work good
 
Will the 9600XT pretty much play any game...i know it may not play some of the highest end games at full graphics and best resolution, but is this graphics card overall...enough? lol thanks:)
 
I have a Radeon 9600XT and i love it my friend has a normal 9600 and my fps are about 10-12 fps better and i ahve had mine for aprox 1 year and i still have yet to find a game that will not run with it.

Uh, im certain you could have extrapolated from post #5? If not its only 100MHz off so not a big difference
 
There is not much difference at all as Praetor as mentioned ;-). Also yea the 9600 Pro can run anygame that I can think of but when I played doom 3 with it all the way through it where slow as heck ;-). I would not do it again now that i'm spoiled on a better card but yea it'll run the games. Also it runs Half Life 2 very well which I have installed on my fiances computer and play Lan with a bud now and again.... Hmmmmm Farcry plays fairly well with it also and I'm not sure If I've mentioned but all these games where played ah "high" settings but not necessarily the highest of settings.
 
Ya I ran a 9600Pro for a few weeks and FarCry was a decently enjoyable experience, 1280x1024 was even playable with max everything except AA/AF. Dropping to 1024x768 let me add some AA/AF but i didnt dare jack it much
 
I suppose I should have mentioned that :-). These games wher and are played whith the drivers set to performance and not quality. Of course the games just look superb anyhow :-).

Thanks everybody for your help, i really appreciate it:) But i have a few more questions. Its about my motherboard configuration. Iam on ebay...looking at purchasing a Radeon 9600XT, and i checked the specs on the 9600XT and checked to just make sure my motherboard was compatible. The 9600XT supports 1x/2x/4x/8x correct? 2x = 3.3V. Now im not sure what even the 2x/4x/8x actually is, or what the 1.5v or 3.3v or 0.8v actually is. Could someone please explain exactly what those things are. Now my board specifies that it can accept 4x/8x video card, but it specifies in brackets a (1.5v), BUT 8x is a 0.8v. I dunno if im lacking knowledge or does that kinda not make sense lol. Now, it says under caution in the motherboard manual... NOT TO INSTALL A 3.3V it could cause DAMAGE. Now some of these video cards are 1x/2x/4x/8x/ which 2x is a 3.3v. Now will that be a problem, or do i set the 1x/2x/4x/8x myself. I dont wanna sound stupid here but it's the video card area of computers where i have very very little knowledge. lol
So does my board support 8x (0.8v) when it says it supports 4x/8x (1.5v), or does that mean thats as low as it goes, which is (1.5v) and anything less like a 3.3v could cause damage? Thanks so much for all ur patience.

Heres exactly what is says:

AGP Slot: 1 AGP slot, supports 1.5V, 8X/4X AGP card (see CAUTION 2)

Caution 2 reads:

Do NOT use a 3.3V AGP card on the AGP slot of this motherboard! It may cause damage!


Or does that mean that itll take a card with ONLY 8X/4X and nothing less and it will only run at 4X (1.5V) And please let me know what these 4X and 8X actually mean etc...Thanks so much for all your time...

If you buy a modern video card you should be good to go :)

ummm hes confusin me a lil isnt 1x/2x/4x/8x just the speed of the agp bus??? not voltage or maybe i just read it wrong wit all the "x" talk???

Nobody said the multiplier directly affected the voltages. Its just that some AGP specs come in different voltages. :)
 
Since my motherboard accepts 1.5v (4X? correct?), the video card will run at 4X, correct? If it runs at 4X and not 8X, will that decrease the performance of the video card in anyway? After analysing different specs from my motherboard and certain video cards, all i know is 2X = 3.3V, 4X = 1.5V and 8X = 0.8V. All i know is that my mother board says it will accept 8X/4X (1.5V)... thats what it says. Im just wondering if that means its going to run at 4X and will that decrease the Video cards performance? I checked my bios cuz i talked to someone that said you can set your AGP in the bios to 1X, 2X etc...the only options in my bios was 1X, 2X, 4X and Auto. Does that mean if I was to get a video card that was 8X, my motherboard will read it or not? And does "Auto" mean it will read the video card at any speed automatically once its put in? I have an ASRock Motherboard K7S41/K7S41GX. Its not the most top of the line board....but just now ironically at the top of the motherboard's maufacturer's box it says AGP 8X. lol i guess that answers my question eh lol. Its just weird that in my bios theres no 8X option...just 1, 2, 4, and Auto. Thanks once again for all your patience lol

Eeeeeeeeerrrmmm ... yeah but I think the point is that we want to play "well" :P (an alternative perspective would probably be "Anything the 9600XT can play, the 9600Pro wont be far behind)

Definitely, anyone who has the time to discuss the quality changes between various AA/AF settings isnt playing they game ... they are standing still :P -- ripe target for a headshot :D

And does "Auto" mean it will read the video card at any speed automatically once its put in?

Auto = maximum speed all the devices commonly support
