Video card smoking...need help.

A few weeks ago my computer started showing all kinds of artifacts on the monitor. I could still surf the web, but when I would scroll up or down, it would wipe two sections of the screen blurry. A few days later (case was off computer to take a peek inside) as I was turning the computer on, I smelled something burning and saw a piece of the video card glowing orange. I quickly shut it off before it was able to spread. I recently spent $80 on a new video card because I can't afford to build a whole new computer right now. Do you think it's a good idea to install the new card and try to start up again. What I'm getting at, is that normal for a video card to die out like that, or is something else in my computer a more probable cause for the video card smoking?

it most likely shorted out. yes it should be perfectly safe for you to install a new video card. i guess your just lucky it didnt spike your motherboard.

Thanks. That makes me feel better. I looked real good with a flashlight at all my components and don't see any burn marks or anything else unusual. There are clear burn marks on the video card though. I think I'm going to give it a shot.:D

Lol don't you know video cards are supposed to do that :P :)

Just kidding, yeah the card probably shorted out. It should be all good to stick a new one in.

Okay, it works just fine! I am so glad that nothing else in the computer was affected. So happy to be back on my desktop as my laptop is really old and slow.:D

Smoking is a practice where a substance, most commonly tobacco, is burned and the smoke tasted or inhaled. This is primarily done as a form of recreational drug use, as combustion releases the active substances in drugs such as nicotine and makes them available for absorption through the lungs. It can also be done as a part of rituals, to induce trances and spiritual enlightenment. The most common method of smoking today is through cigarettes, either industrially manufactured or rolled with loose tobacco and a rolling paper. Other forms, though not as common, are pipes, cigars, hookahs and bongs.

hahahaha wtf does smoking have to do with this thread unless his graphics card is getting high :P
