If you're even considering the 9800GT, I would look at some of the 8800GT's. Since they're older, many companies have already sent out top of the line 8800GT's with insane overclocks. NVIDIA kept the same architecture in the 9800GT that they used for the 8800GT. You would basically be buying an 8800GT with a different name. The only difference is it would be brand new and more expensive, with no overclock. And if you're considering the 9800GTX, I would wait for the 9800GTX+. They're only $200 and regardless of performance increase over the original, it's still considerably cheaper than the 9800GTX.

I would recommend getting the Radeon 4850, it's cheaper than the GTX and AFAIK performs a little better. If it has to be a NVIDIA I would look into the 8800GTs as they're being sold for insanely cheap as someone already said, it's currently one of the best-value cards out there though you would get very reasonably priced extra performance if you went with the 4850.

Yeah, that is only if you are going down the NVIDIA route. The 4850 actually performs better than the 9800GTX and is only priced around $160. The only con I can see to it is it's buggy Catalyst Control set at like 3% fan speed. There are cracks to get around this though.
