Video Card..

At the moment, I am running on a 1.8 GHz, 512MB Ram, Radeon 7000 video card, i play counter-strike alot, and this problem never happened till a couple of days a go, even though my video card is old, i used to get around 25 frames. Anyways, I was playing one day when all the sudden my screen turned red and red lines poped up, I couldn't see anything but i knew were the exit button, and I shut down my computer, after i restarted it fixed the problem, now after the first time this happened, everytime i play counter-strike for like 5 mins, it even happened in less then 1 MINUTE, my screen would get messed up, forcing me to restarting because i cant see anything. Is it my video card? Or is it something else? Please post any possible answers even if you think your rong.

Thanks, TucanSpam

I'm surprised it even ran with only 32mb to start with. If the card seen at the link here matches the card you are using you would need to upgrade to a 128mb card at least to see one of the newer games run properly. One Radeon 7000 can be seen at http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0000630TB/dealtime-ce-feed-20/ref=nosim

The card you are running is simply too far outdated for the newest games out. If you provide a little more information on the rest of the system a better card can be recommended. The make and model board would be the main thing there in order to look over the cpecifications on it.

I was pretty sure I had a 64MB card...but i dont know how to check, I right clicked on my desktop, then properties and check from there but it didn't say.

Anyways, I was looking at a video card. http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/search.asp?page=2&keywords=x1600
I dont get why some are expensive and some are cheap? There the same video card.

Dont get that video card, its an extemely poor card. If you need an AGP card, I would recommend an x800/x850 series, or for PCI-E the 7600GS/GT.

You can buy a high end card, but it will be bottlenecked by your other components.

To get a x850 would require me to get a better power supply, which i would not like to do.....

And my Radeon 7000 is a 64MB card:eek:

What make and model board do you have there? That will give a better idea of what hardwares are supported. When you listed 512mb of ram is that one 512mb dimm or a pair of 256mb dimms? On an older board with PC2100 or PC2700 memory being run you will want to increase the amount there in order to run most of the newer games out as well as find a good AGP card to run.

A supply 350w or under doesn't quite make it with the newer hardwares out. One word of advice here is that by the time you replace enough hardwares to have a decent gaming machine you will have already spent what could be used towards a new build. And the card there is 32mb not 64mb.

That's the VGA going caput. It's done. You're going to have to replace it I'm afraid.

I'm surprised it lasted that long with Counter Strike or any other one of the newer games out. That card was probably red hot to touch! CS would stress two of the old GeForce 128mb AGP cards used here on the last build even though they would handle some newer games far better.

yeah so i asked my dad about the X1600 and he said i could get it, i was wondering if it will work on my computer? tell me which info you need to know about my computer...and i'll find it.

The reason im getting a X1600 and not upgrading my power supply is because im getting a kick ass gateway sometime in december..so i dont want to waste to much of my dads money on this peice of junk.

You certainly need to get out of that case at this point. But I would say Gateway is almost down there with eMachines to some degree. As far as getting a low cost replacement at this time I can point you at one or two links to look over the better AGP cards available. You won't need a $300 card just to run CS there.

It will work fine. Your motherboard support will establish whether you get the AGP or the PCI-e version. Make sure you check that. It's probably AGP.
