Video cards and Direct X

Ok so I'm looking at getting a new graphics card to support a third monitor. Currently I have a Radeon HD 4870 which uses DX 10 I believe (might be 11, not sure, 10 definitely though). I'm looking at a low-end PCI card that would basically just run the third monitor. No gaming going on on it or anything like that, just displaying a browser and documents, maybe a movie at times, which pretty much gives me the sole option of this:

Problem is, it uses DirectX 7. I have whatever the newest version is (10 or 11, I don't remember any more and I'm not on my desktop so can't figure out), so would it even work in my computer?

It's best to use a card from the same generation (DX10.1 for the 4870) so a 4xxx ati card.

Or you could sell your 4870, and buy a 5850 (uses eyefinity, means you can have 3 monitors on one card)

If you are not a gamer then get a 5770 or 5750 as they still have DX11 and eyefinity

So would the card not work at all? Upgrading to the 5870 isn't really an option at the moment due to money so I was looking for a cheaper alternative.

Unfortunately all of the DX 10 compatible cards use x16 slots, and I only have one, which is occupied by my current video card. So I'm quite limited in needing something that uses an x1 slot or a standard PCI slot. Else I have to upgrade my MB, which means I have to upgrade my processor as well, and I don't have the money to do that right now, so that's not really an option either.

You don't need a 5870. look up 5750 or 5770 on newegg, they are a lot cheaper with the same features, and will suit what you need.

Running 3 monitors w/ 5750...

You have to run the third monitor off the display port. You can only use 2 out of the dvi and hdmi ports. Other than that go for it these cards are cheap for their 40nm tech and 1gb gddr5 memory.
