Video Editing Software

Does anyone have any advice on a good program to purchase?

I mainly use it for transfering from a digital 8 to dvd.

Thanks in advance.

I've always used Premiere. That might be much more than you want to spend and have many more features than you want to use, but it's probably the best for Windows.

Nope... I've only used an old version of Ulead video studio, Windows Movie Maker, and Premiere. Maybe you could find an older copy of Permiere 6.5 for a better price. The major improvement over 6.5 to 7(Pro) is DV playback and some other real-time features. Personally, though, I prefer the older version 6.5...

How about premiere elements, not sure how much that would cost, but iuse pemiere pro and love it, but if you have access to a mac Final Cut is incredibly good, and easy to use

Can you clarify what you mean by "dvd"? There are two different scenarios. First is that you simply import the video, do some rudimentary editing and stick it on a dvd (as a data dvd). Second is that after doing the basic editing, you author a dvd like a movie dvd. To ensure playability in all standalone dvd players you have author the dvd.

Also, you must have a video card that can accept input from outside or the video comes into the pc via firewire/usb. Which? Do you have any existing software for importing the video?

I'm doing some editing and then author the dvd like a movie

The video comes to the pc via firewire.

I currently have Windows movie maker but I'm looking for something with more options.

You will get most bang for the buck with the popular tier of apps, Ulead, Sonic/Roxio plus those mentioned by others. I would give Premiere Pro a miss - great prog but only if you need all the bells and whistles. I would look at each online and take a trial of the one that looks most promising. You only find the limitations that way.

The further you go up the cost scale the more versatile but less user-friendly apps become. You are required to have the video in correct format and navigation may be less structured ie you have to do it. With the cheaper apps, you can throw just about anything in the pot.

I use TMPGEncDVD Author for run-of-the-mill dvds and Sony DVD Architect for specialized ones. Have used old versions of Ulead and Sonic MyDVD.

not long ago i came across presentavid (http://www.presentavid.com). simple and nice video editor. can delete frames, add callouts, own logos & watermarks, can burn cd/dvd automatically to watch on a tv and publish your video in different popular formats (avi, wmv, mpeg, even flash (swf/flv) and gif), also can record a screen (region, window) and then allows to edit it. good for beginners.
