Video editing

I was wondering what is a good video editing software. Not like windows movie maker where you simply add clips and pictures to make a video, but something that allows you to create and/or edit an actual moving picture. I'm looking for something that will allow me to create something like a .gif file. You know, a short moving clip. Any help is appreciated.

Are you looking for a free program or are you willing to spend money? If you are willing to spend money, how much?

Adobe Premiere is as good as you can go with Windows. Maybe you could find yourself an older copy of 6.5 on Amazon for sell... I actually prefered that verison.

all the ones SC7 mentioned, and Final Cut is very good on a mac, it is similar to adobe premiere, but probably slightly easier to use, although not as many advanced features

I guess your productions will be called BloopBloopBloopers?

If you are looking to make animated gifs from existing footage or any still frames, you don't need anything special. A combination of freeware programs will do the job.

Extract frames:
Irfanview (extracts ALL frames so beware!)
VirtualDub, VirtualDubMod (does mpeg2)

Convert frames to Paletted 8bit colour:
Irfanview

Make animated gif:
MS Gif Animator

MS Gif Animator is a bit of a pain to use but works fine.

To make optimized gifs you can use Paint Shop Pro Animator if you happen to have PSP. Many other payware graphics apps will assemble gifs as an animated gif as well as do the other jobs. I use an old version of PolyView for non-optimized gifs.

Final Cut Express on Mac is an even better solution for ease of use. I like a lot of the Apple Pro tools, very nicely developed, just wished they made them on Windows.
