Video File Editing

Hello - i have XP SP3. I see in Programs -> WindowsMedia -> Utilities, that it has a WMV file editor along with a Profile and Stream Editor (whatever they are). I have never used a video editor before..so does this program allow me to cut and paste any WMV files? So i can cut bits out or add bits into a video file? If yes, is this program Ok or is there a better one i can get from the web?

Will it also edit *.flv files?

Thanks for any advice,
steve

I've not used any of the Windows Media stuff. You can edit with MS Movie Maker which is under Programs > Accessories. I think that only does Windows formats such as wmv. It's OK for free but a bit limited.

The better video editors that are easy to use are payware. You could google "video editor free" no quotes. I always got a free one with every PC I bought (one of the little-mentioned pluses of buying locally pre-built).

movie maker will do. but i suggest avidemux or virtualdub for better result and there are nice plugins for these sfotware

You will find VirtualDub useless for WMV and MPEG2 (will not load). VirtualDubMod will load MPEG2. I don't know about Avidemux.

They are quite flexible as Tender suggested but no very user-friendly and intended for Avi format. What I call geekware. They are part of a host of freeware including things like AviSynth, DGIndex etc. They can produce, but a long learning curve for the user.
