Actually which one is better depends on the device or pregram you'll put(play) on.
Personally, I think MP4 is popular for most device and video player.

in my experience robert avi plays on loads of things from mobile phones, dvd players, usb tvs, alot of the items i have i converted to different formats for seperate items to suit their listed compatible formats, but through messing around and trying different formats found even if avi is not listed in their compatible formats most things can play it
