video playback problem

ok, im running windows XP media center on the rig in my sig below

after a fresh restart, all video types play fine with all players.

after some time, i try to open a video, watch a video online in an IE embedded player (like WMP), or watch a DVD, all my media players (VLC, WMP, DIVX player, etc) give the same black screen with random blue artifacts that vaguely outline the video i am trying to watch.

this can always be fixed with a restart, but i want to fix it for good.

here is what i have tried: reinstalling nvidia drivers, trying older drivers, reinstalling all codecs (K-lite, etc), reinstalling media players, disabling all unneccessary processes in the task manager. moving the videos to a different drive. i cannot for the life of me figure this out!!

if anyone has any ideas please let me know, thanks!

VLC has it own set of codecs that cannot be replaced, so i doubt it's codec problems. Have you looked at the event viewer? Right click My Computer < manage < event viewer. Check both applications and system logs, There might be an error or something that occurs around the time of the problem.

It's probably some sort of software conflict.. you could attempt a cold boot (msconfig < general < diagnostic startup) to be sure.. hmm.
