video problems

hi all,
today i installed a new Asus EAH2600XT graphics card in my uncles computer to replace his slower one (ATI x1300 pro), i then installed a fresh copy of XP Pro. after i got all the drivers installed i noticed that there were pixels flickering in random areas on the screen, and it would happen with different applications open, looking at pics, or just while using windows period. and since i put a grapic wallpaper on, every time windows starts there is a line of pixles flashing green in 1 area. but heres the thing all i have to do is turn the monitor off then on and everythings fine until the next restart.

this never happened with the old vid card, i just built his computer less then 6 months ago with higher end parts and his monitor is a HP 20.1" LCD with DVI connections. i tried plugging in the DVI to the 2nd connector on the vid card and it started pixel flickering in DOS and windows. i tried installing the Asus drivers and the ATI drivers and nothing. i even tried pulling the card and cleaning the gold connectors and nothing. in fact the only thing that seemed to work was lowering the screen resolution from 1600x1200 to 1280x1024. but the screen is meant for 1600x1200. i personally have this card in my computer and it works great with Vista, so i think its possibly a dud:(

so any help/thoughts would be appreciated.

I'd try the other card or another monitor if at all possible. That's really strange, though, that turning the monitor off would fix it... How about VGA? Have you tried connecting using VGA? Probably no difference but I'm just throwing some random things out there :P

The card supports an even higher screen resolution then that as seen at newegg. Max Resolution2560 x 1600 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121082

Unfortunately the Asus site is down for maintainence for a few days to look over the specifications on that model. Which version of the Catalyst do you have installed? The software on the cd that comes with the card, the 7.9, or the latest 7.10? The software disk and 7.9 seem to have the same catalyst while different release. The 7.10 now out fixes the bugs seen with the original and 7.9 drivers.

well the first time around i installed the newest one off of ati's site (the 'driver only' install) once i saw that didnt work i reformated again and tried the drivers off the CD and still the same flickering.

If you saved the update to a folder that should be the 7.10 since you otherwise have to click on the previous link for the older versions at their support site. The green pixels being seen since you seem to have the latest drivers on could also be the monitor itself like T_O_O pointed out earlier.

There was one tool for repair of dead or dying pixels someone pointed out sometime back. After this amount of time I don't have the link for that one. You could check the manufacturer's own site for information there about display problems and utilities to see if they have something like that available. The information on defective sub pixels can be seen for HP at http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?objectID=c00288895#N1001A
