viewing digital camera videos?

just got back from a field trip and got lots of images and vids on my digital camera(nikon coolpix 3200) and now got back and i wanna watch the vids on my laptop, windows media player encounters an unknown error with this, so how do i view the video?

What file extension are the videos, .avi? You might do well trying another media player like Realplayer, to see if you come up with the same error.

Often in this situation I'd be saying "you need the right codec", but I've never known a codec used for digital camera vids not to be built into every media player going, so I'd guess it's something else.
