Viri, Trojans & Pings

I thought someone here would have some good up-to-date info on the stuff we try to protect out computers from. I have a small basic (could be mis-informed too) understanding. Might be out of date. ot myths. Please expand.

Virus & Trojans: usually comes from opened email attachments or going to a malicious webpage. Can come from infected media like Cd's, DVD's or embedded in digital photos. Webcrawlers can activate just by opening an email to read, though not too worrisome.

Pings: My firewall log reads that I get about 2000 pings per month at a particuliar port #'s and they appear to come from worldwide. I think they are automated sniffers usually looking for a way in to plant whatever they wish to plant. Hijacks etc.

Dataminers: Tracking cookies. A pain, but not too big of a deal as long as you clean up regular.

That is about the end of my knowledge. And probably out of date. What is the current state of the art of these buggers? Thanks, Jack

Worms are one of the worst, they simply go in and out of any computer system used as their zombie, and jump across the net planting themselves into anyone's computer from whom they can gain access. Many expert hackers and worm makers etc. use them to corupt bank systems and steal large amounts of money, as the worms can easily manipulate the systems and such.
