Virtual Machines - How much RAM?

Hello

To run at once iTunes + a Virtual Machine + BF3, for example, how much RAM would I need?

Or could I get a lower amount of RAM, at a higher frequency - eg 1866MHz?

Cheers

you will not see much difference in RAM with higher speed. More exact, if you need 2 GB, you will need 2GB weather it is 133MHz or 5GHz.

I would say 12 or 16 GB in dual channel mode would be in the area of what you need. You may get away with less, just depends on what you are doing with your VM.

OK.

Just one question, on this product page http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=186_538_913&products_id=18886 it doesn't have my motherboard on the comparability list, does that defiantly mean it won't work? Will the Extreme4 not take 2x8GB?

It should work. It would take them years to test all the rams out there. You are worrying about a small possibility. I would go for the 2x8.

Go for 2x8GB to get 16GB, then if you find it sluggish drop in another 2x8GB DIMMs to make 32GB. I'm running VMs on 16GB of RAM right now, they run fast enough and I can usually allocate around 6-8GB per VM before I'll start to get memory swapping. With 32GB you could allocate up to around 16GB of RAM per VM.

General rule of thumb is that you can usually allocate around half of your physical memory to the VM before you may start running into issues. For example, if you have 8GB of RAM, I'd say 4GB is the most memory you want to allocate to VM, if you have 16GB, then 8GB and so on.

I will 4 GB for all those application only, so if you need to run some other applications then you have to add more RAM.
