Virtual Memory Low

I have a computer I'm trying to fix and everytime I try to print in Legal Size it says virtual memory low. I did a system restore and increased the RAM so i could increase the virtual memory because it's recommended not to have it more then 33% of the RAM (i forgot the exact # but i looked it up.) I increased the virtual memory several different times and ended up giving up after i increased to over 4GB of virtual memory...which is now drawing off the hard drive i believe. I'm kinda confused on how virtual memory works so if someone could explain and maybe help me fix my problem..

You should not have to adjust the page file size. First, which OS are you using? Second, how much actual memory (RAM) do you have in this machine?
