Virus Help

My friends computer has a few viruses on his computer, and I am trying to get rid of them. He had someone install Umbrella or something like that, and the program kept showing the names of the virus, WORM/Rbot.208384.8 and TR/Crypt.ULPM.Gen. I tried installing Hijack this, but it had trouble installing cause it was taking to long. I installed Ad-Aware and ran a short scan, and removed a bunch of items, but nothing virus related.

I told him reformatting is a last resort, since it would take sometime to back everything important up.

Thanks.

Hello,

Have him run SDFix:
Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
  • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

Then Combofix:
Download and Run ComboFix
If you already have Combofix, please delete this copy and download it again as it's being updated regularly.
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.

Post back the two logs and try to get a HJT log aswell :)

Alright, so booting in SafeMode will make it easier to install and run Hijackthis?

Which should I run? Hijackthis or SDFix?

And he cant connect to the internet, should I just save the log in a .txt file and post it here?

Thanks.

Download the three tools to a CD (a USB might get infected by a virus) or use a spare USB...

Run in order:

SDFix
Combofix
Hijackthis

If you are going to this friend's house, I suggest you print out the instructions, since he doesn't have access to internet :).

Should I run those programs in that order? And are they as easy as clicking the .exe?

How would I know if the USB is infected, I used a spare one I had lying around, would I know by plugging it in and scanning it?

Thanks.

Depends on what virus...

I would recommend a CD, unless you are throwing away your USB afterwards...
