Virus, keeps returning.

Cleaning a friends computer and keep getting the same virus returning after restart. Did clean in both normal mode and safe mode. keeps coming back. MBAM and HIJACKTHIS below, how do I get rid of this stuff?:

Please follow these instructions as you are still infected.

First:
You need to update and then re-run Malwarebytes, then post the log along with a new HiJackThis log.


Scan with Malwarebytes first, then HiJackThis. And we can go from there.

How to use System Restore to restore Windows XP to a previous state
Note To perform System Restore, you must be logged on to Windows as an administrator. If this is your personal computer, you are likely already logged on with an administrator account. If this is a computer that is part of a network at work, you might have to ask the system administrator for help. To verify that you are logged on to Windows with a user account that is a computer administrator, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

To use System Restore to restore Windows XP to a previous state, follow these steps:

1. Log on to Windows as Administrator.
2. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Restore. System Restore starts.
3. On the Welcome to System Restore page, click Restore my computer to an earlier time (if it is not already selected), and then click Next.
4. On the Select a Restore Point page, click the most recent system restore point in the On this list, click a restore point list, and then click Next.

Note A System Restore message may appear that lists configuration changes that System Restore will make. Click OK.
5. On the Confirm Restore Point Selection page, click Next. System Restore restores the previous Windows XP configuration, and then restarts the computer.
6. Log on to the computer as Administrator. The System Restore Restoration Complete page is displayed.
7. Click OK.

Hopefully that uninstalls the virus.
 
With all due respect, there is no 100% fail-proof way ;).

Yeah there is, follow what we tell you to do. System restore is only a temporary fix at best, you still would have to disinfect your system. Malware reside in system restore so even if you do the system restore most of the time you will still be infected.

Please follow gamblingman's advice and update malwarebytes as the database you are using is way outdated. If it won't update, please follow this procedure to redownload an updated malwarebytes and then finish updating it.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here or here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version. Please keep updating until it says you have the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • A log will be saved automatically which you can access by clicking on the Logs tab within Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Post the new malwarebytes log along with the fresh hijackthis log.
 
The problem with the updating is the computer that it is on has no way of updating because it can't get online due to the virus. Is there a way to download the update and instal via usb?
 
Download and run rkill.scr but do not reboot the computer and then try updating malwarebytes again.

Rkill should temporarily kill the infection that is stopping the malwarebytes from updating.

Or you may perform the following procedure.

Download and Run ComboFix
If you already have Combofix, please delete this copy and download it again as it's being updated regularly.
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.


In your next reply please post:
  • The ComboFix log
  • A fresh HiJackThis log
  • An update on how your computer is running
 
alright we did it. I got the computer back online, ran mbam, that spy one you told me about earlier and for safe measures the combofix. Everything scans clean after several reboots. Thanks guys.
 
You really need to post the logs Johnb35 listed as needed so that the logs can be checked for issues you may not be aware of, or see.

Please post the Combofix log, also re-scan with HiJackThis and post its new log; and an update on how the computer is running.
 
Oh yea, I actually gave their computer back shortly after finding out a clean computer after multiple scans and reboots. I no longer have the logs but it was good to go. Thanks!
