The program to choose will depend whether you plan on retail or freewares. For an excellent retail product for virus protection go for Trend Micro's line of antivirus software that also features adware/spyware removal tools. For a few good freewares AVG by Grisoft along with Lavasoft's Ad-Aware and the more recent Spyware Terminator work well together. Spybot Search&Destroy also make a favored list. Avast is another free antivirus tool as well as WIN AntiVIR and a few others. Norton and McAfee drop below the quality list.
For cleaning up the offline content and removing all traces of IE activity one free tool comes to mind called Evidence Nuker. You can find that at

Besides antivirus and adware/spyware removers having a half way decent firewall can be a plus. The two freewares in mind are Commodo and Jetico at the links here, For Commodo go to
http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/ and for a look at Jetico,
