my sister has come down with some sort of virus that changed her background to red with white crossbones that says something to the effect of you are now infected.. and three so called antivirus type icons are installed on her desktop... also there are numerous pop warnings of infection and suggestions to use certain antivirus... unfortunately i can't see all of this for my self as she does not live near by... i will try to get a hackthis log from her.. but does anyone have any ideas about this in the mean time.. thanks

red background... update

update the message on the red screen is in light red and says... your privacy is in danger.. download privacy protection now... and a light red symbol like three bones extending beyond a circle.. sort of like plague symbol... the icons are...
error cleaner with shield and magnifying glass symbol... privacy protector with shield and sword down it... spyware and malware protection with a shield and an arrow...

I dont think this is a virus , i think its malware try this ::

download SmitfraudFix by Searching it on google
Extract the zip folder <a folder named SmitfraudFix> to your Desktop... or Douments better to be on desktopp

Save this Text somewhere else except the computer ... Print this text out .. or Write it down on a piece of paper because you wouldnt be able be on the internet

Restart your computer into Safe Mode .. With out networking <Hit F8 just before the Operating System starts to load and select Safe Mode from the list>

In Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder and click the smitfraudfix.cmd twice
Select #2 option - Clean by typing 2 and press Enter to start deleting infected files.
You will be Asked: Registry cleaning - "Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer Y by typing Y and press Enter in order to remove the Desktop Background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

And go on from there...

Ask the admins or mods if this doesnt work..

Glad your problem is fixed. You might want to consider posting a HijackThis log anyway, since these infections will sometimes come along with other forms of malware, and/or leave traces that should be manually removed.

Just curious, do you have a screen shot of the hijacked wallpaper ? I am curious to see how it looks. Skull and crossbones, I guess hackers got to have some sort of sense of humor huh?
