Virus took over my computer

I had a virus take over my computer and I am lost on how to fix it.

I follow the threat instructions and ran HiJack This and Malwarebyte:

though I cannot get HiJack to print to file, it says I am denied access to host file... and then notepad is blank. It said to go in delete the HiJack This lines and save as 'hosts.' which I did, and to reboot. I didn't want to reboot until you gave me the thumbs up. It still runs the program, so I could either type them all out or follow what you need me to do.

I attached the malwarebyte log file

Symptoms:
-warning says "Files indexation process failed"
-I constantly getting multiple pop ups at a time that say "Failed to save all the components for the file \\System32\\000........."
-all program files are now hidden
-windows thinks that:
--hard drive space less thank technical limits
--hard drive rotational speed exceeds system limits and may cause system failure
--disk drive C:\ is unreadable
--damaged hard drive clusters detected. Private data at risk. Restore is required.
--hard drive does not correspond to system requests
--boot sector of hard drive is damaged
--RAM memory speed decreased significantly and may cause system failure
--hard drive rotational speed decreased by 20%

Please tell me what to do, I need so of the files that it is hiding and didn't want to start wiping stuff until I knew it was last resort.

To unhide your program files and such you need to download and run UNHIDE.EXE . It may take a few minutes for it to run so be patient.

Then rerun hijackthis but this time, right click on the icon and click on run as. If the run as option doesn't appear then press and hold the shift key while right clicking on hijackthis to get run as to appear. Did you run rkill before running malwarebytes?

If you already ran Ccleaner, your files are gone most likely as the infection hides your files in a temp folder which ccleaner deletes if ran. Try running unhide.exe and see what happens.

Yes, run rkill and then run malwarebytes but do not reboot the system until after malwarebytes has ran. If you still have problems you can run combofix.

Download and Run ComboFix
If you already have Combofix, please delete this copy and download it again as it's being updated regularly.
  • Download this file here :

    Combofix

  • When the page loads click on the blue combofix download link next to the BleepingComputer Mirror.
  • Save the file to your windows desktop. The combofix icon will look like this when it has downloaded to your desktop.

    cf-icon.jpg
  • We are almost ready to start ComboFix, but before we do so, we need to take some preventative measures so that there are no conflicts with other programs when running ComboFix. At this point you should do the following:

  • Close all open Windows including this one.
  • Close or disable all running Antivirus, Antispyware, and Firewall programs as they may interfere with the proper running of ComboFix. Instructions on disabling these type of programs can be found here.
Once these two steps have been completed, double-click on the ComboFix icon found on your desktop. Please note, that once you start ComboFix you should not click anywhere on the ComboFix window as it can cause the program to stall. In fact, when ComboFix is running, do not touch your computer at all. The scan could take a while, so please be patient.
  • Please click on I agree on the disclaimer window.
  • ComboFix will now install itself on to your computer. When it is done, a blue screen will appear as shown below.

    cf-preparing.jpg

  • ComboFix is now preparing to run. When it has finished ComboFix will automatically attempt to create a System Restore point so that if any problems occur while using the program you can restore back to your previous configuration. When ComboFix has finished creating the restore point, it will then backup your Windows Registry as shown in the image below.

    erunt.jpg

  • Once the Windows Registry has finished being backed up, ComboFix will attempt to detect if you have the Windows Recovery Console installed. If you already have it installed, you can skip to this section and continue reading. Otherwise you will see the following message as shown below:

    recovery-console-prompt.jpg

  • At the above message box, please click on the Yes button in order for ComboFix to continue. Please follow the steps and instructions given by ComboFix in order to finish the installation of the Recovery Console.
  • Please click on yes in the next window to continue scanning for malware.
  • ComboFix will now disconnect your computer from the Internet, so do not be surprised or concerned if you receive any warnings stating that you are no longer on the Internet. When ComboFix has finished it will automatically restore your Internet connection.
  • ComboFix will now start scanning your computer for known infections. This procedure can take some time, so please be patient.
  • While the program is scanning your computer, it will change your clock format, so do not be concerned when you see this happen. When ComboFix is finished it will restore your clock settings to their previous settings. You will also see the text in the ComboFix window being updated as it goes through the various stages of its scan. An example of this can be seen below.

    still-scanning-clockchanges.jpg

  • When ComboFix has finished running, you will see a screen stating that it is preparing the log report.
  • This can take a while, so please be patient. If you see your Windows desktop disappear, do not worry. This is normal and ComboFix will restore your desktop before it is finished. Eventually you will see a new screen that states the program is almost finished and telling you the programs log file, or report, will be located at C:\ComboFix.txt.
  • When ComboFix has finished, it will automatically close the program and change your clock back to its original format. It will then display the log file automatically for you.
  • Now you just click on the edit menu and click on select all, then click on the edit menu again and click on copy. Then come to the forum in your reply and right click on your mouse and click on paste.

In your next reply please post:
  • The ComboFix log
  • A fresh HiJackThis log
  • An update on how your computer is running

You can try running a system restore back to prior being infected and see if everything is back to normal but I don't think it will be, you may get lucky.

what should I do next.

I ran UNHIDE.exe and my icons came back. Then I ran HIJACTHIS again as an administrator and was able to get the log file. It is attached.

I also noticed that my program files still say that they are empty and I am still getting the system fix dialog box (which I cannot close) and all the pop up dialog boxes.

1 final thing to note, before you got back to me the first time I rebooted my comp to get the write file to work in HiJacks and to my dismay, all the new downloaded programs were gone(everything was). since then I have followed your instructions, but I just wanted to tell you in case this paints a better picture of the issues I am having

Thanks
Mark

At this point I suggest running the combofix program I mentioned, it should get rid of the balance of the malware. But you will still be without your program icons, you could possibly rebuild them. Its up to you what you want to do. Let me know. Again, system restore may be an option.

attached are:

-new Malwarebytes run (second operation)

sorry they may have attached out of order, but are labeled correctly

I disabled Symantec Endpoint before running combofix, but I noticed since the computer auto rebooted and Combofix finished, a symantec Endpoint auto warning popped up saying:

I also have found that when I go in the start menu, all my program files are still empty (which is weird b/c I can still run the files like excel if I open an excel file on my desktop), and if I right click on them, the start menu closes and all my icons on the screen flash. "Documents", "Pictures", "Music", "Computer", "Control Panel", and "Help ..." have returned to the start menu, and I can now access them. Al my folders in my documents are also back, but there is a Empty Public Documents section now that I don't remember (could be me).

I also noticed that my icons are flashing a lot this they are refreshing. That is a little alarming to me.

Please tell me what I should do next. Eventually I want restore my computer as well, but not sure what way to do that with all the stuff we have been doing (meaning I don't want to cause any problems to reoccur).

Thank You

Unfortunately I'm driving to work right now so won't be able to reply until I get back home late this evening. Be patient and I'll help you the best I can.

Since I was on break, decided to check in on this. You posted 3 hijackthis logs without posting the combofix log. I cant open attached files on my phone so I have no idea if you actually ran combofix, I don't think you did. Also when running malwarebytes, please make sure you click on the remove selected button so that it removes the infections it found. It says no action was taken so they weren't deleted. I won't get home for another 5 hours or so. Hopefully you will have the correct logs for me then. I will check in again in a few hours.

Follow Up 2

Sorry, I put the wrong text up on the previous post. I did run ComboFix earlier in the day and have done the other stuff you said to do. I was temped to re-run ComboFix, but I thought it would be smart to wait and see if I even needed too (it said to wait for a professional to advise usage).

I did re- run Malwarebyte and HiJack This after deleting all my quarentines.

Here are all 3 print outs

Also, I am new to all of this and I was just wandering:
What should I do next? At what point can I do a system restore? Will it ever be safe to use my computer for banking and personal info after this virus?

Thank you for your help and patience.

So at this point, your program entries are gone, your icons are back and you should not be getting any more popups right now??? You can do a system restore any time you want to but you will still have to rescan your system for infections. It may be better for you to back up any personal data and reinstall windows. I doubt very seriously if performing a system restore will bring back your program entries, but you can try.
