My wife's laptop (Dell E1505) suddenly went a bit nutty: it turns on, and her initial signin comes up, she signs in and then it takes several minutes for the desktop screen to appear. None of her desktop icons appear, just the background wallpaper. During another few minutes we see the McAfee logo for the security center pop up for a second; then an alert comes up in the lower left from the McAfee system saying there's a "buffer full" problem. You can clear that alert, but then nothing more happens. The CPU light seems to be busy with something, but icons never come up on the desktop. The only thing I know to do is the old Alt-cntr-Del combo; that brings up the box to shutdown or go to taskmanager, but the taskmanager box is greyed out--can't even go there to see what's up. Also, can't get to/see the Start box or anything else on the screen to do anything. If I put a CD in the player nothing happens either on-screen.
The Mcafee service on the unit has been expired for about 8 months--my wife never told me or renewed it herself. Also, my stepdaughter uses the computer a lot to go on various kid's game sites. She was the last one using it yesterday. Any one have any suggestions about how to get the thing at least connecting to the net so I could run a program to find the problem? Or any other suggestions?
