Virus?! What to do? Suggestions?

My wife's laptop (Dell E1505) suddenly went a bit nutty: it turns on, and her initial signin comes up, she signs in and then it takes several minutes for the desktop screen to appear. None of her desktop icons appear, just the background wallpaper. During another few minutes we see the McAfee logo for the security center pop up for a second; then an alert comes up in the lower left from the McAfee system saying there's a "buffer full" problem. You can clear that alert, but then nothing more happens. The CPU light seems to be busy with something, but icons never come up on the desktop. The only thing I know to do is the old Alt-cntr-Del combo; that brings up the box to shutdown or go to taskmanager, but the taskmanager box is greyed out--can't even go there to see what's up. Also, can't get to/see the Start box or anything else on the screen to do anything. If I put a CD in the player nothing happens either on-screen.
The Mcafee service on the unit has been expired for about 8 months--my wife never told me or renewed it herself. Also, my stepdaughter uses the computer a lot to go on various kid's game sites. She was the last one using it yesterday. Any one have any suggestions about how to get the thing at least connecting to the net so I could run a program to find the problem? Or any other suggestions?

You will need to run the software here. You will most likely have to download it from a working computer and transfer it with a usb flash drive. If you can't get malwarebytes to run then you will need to download combofix and run it. Please post all logs back here if you can get them to run.

Well, I downloaded the 2 programs to a flashdrive; problem seems to be that my wife's computer simply won't acknowledge that the flash drive is there at all--just like can't access the net at all, can't access the H drive or anything else for that matter. Her whole screen just shows her desktop--but without a single icon.
Any other suggestions?

Ctrl-alt-delete on application tab click on new task and type "explorer" without the quotes and the desktop icons should load. Then you should be able to go to my computer to access the flash drive.

I'm afraid Ctrl-alt-delete will not access the Task manager. It does bring up the Security box, with "shutdown," "change password," etc., The "task manager" box is there but is greyed out--clicking on it does nothing. I was just noticing on the computer that one of the little 'padlock' icons up above the keyboard is lit up (green). It has a '9' inside it. Does that mean anything? I have the same computer (dell e1505) and my 'padlocks' are never lit up (except the one for Caps lock). Anyway, I appreciate any help and suggestions on this. It's kinda lookin like my wife's puter is going to be needing an in-person fix-up. But I'm still open to other suggestions...

try ctrl+shift+esc
that will bring task manager.
tried ctrl+shift+esc.
A box pops up saying "Task Manager has been disabled by your administrator."
Any other suggestins out there to at least be able to even run the recommended programs?

Can you take the hard drive out and slave it to another system and scan it that way? You can use malwarebytes to scan, do a full scan and check the drive that you just put in. You might also want to scan it with a virus scanner while in the good PC.

Well, I'm not much of a computer guy. So I'm not really in to taking out a hard drive. I did talk to my IT guy at work, and he told me to bring the computer in to him tomorrow and he'd be able to 'take care of it.' I can hardly wait to see if he's right.

aww... the damage the virus cause is too severe... I afraid it almost impossible to repair if you cannot access to task manager or registry editor.

Yes, that's what I'm afraid of. It turns out that my IT guy wasn't able to check my wife's puter today--but will tomorrow. Does anyone know what virus this likely is?
