Ok so I just built my new computer and somehow already have a virus, Norton found it but can't get it off or quarantine it. Some of it is in the windows files it ends in letsroll.exe. wtf is this thing on my brand new hd??

Unpatched and unprotected PCs connected directly to the Internet are very likely infected in less than 5 minutes.

Get it updated behind a firewall or offline before you connect.

To delete the file, boot into Safe Mode, find the file and delete it. Better yet, if you don't have any data on this PC yet, get it off line, format, and reinstall and update XP before you get it back on line.

Good Luck

yea that happened to me. If you are using DSL or faster, go down and get a router, there pretyt cheap for all that they do. PLug your computer in threw the router, then reformat, get SP2, antivirus, and a firewall. With me i dont even use a firewall because the router works just fine.

Try running the virus scan from safe mode before taking any more drastic action. Also try www.housecall.antivirus.com, sometimes it can get rid of viruses that Norton can't. Remember that Symantec has an online virus database, so if you go to their website they may have a removal tool specifically for the virus you have. You should also post the name of the virus here.

*shudder* I can't stand hijackthis. When there was no answer to a desperate plea for help here, I went to another forum. All you will see there is hijackthis logs. No one got anywhere on that forum. I think hijackthis is useless.

And, well, yes. What is the name of the virus? BYW, Norten usually can't delete files. Before my hdd had to be reformatted, and even a few months before that, I had it.
I reccomend you get a copy of Avast! Antivirus (it's free). It has many ways of deleting or making files useless. It's a lot better than Norton.

Just so you know, it your computer hasn't really suffered yet, or the virus is currently inactive, you had better get it off by Dec. 25/26. I've heard of viruses that are set to go off at a given date, or an important holiday.

Also, and for a firewal, you should get ZoneAlarn (Free or Pro). I use it and it's great. I can highly reccomend it. It blocked about nine unwanted access attempts to my computer in only a few hours.
