viruses and slow computer

HELP. My brother's desk top is extremely slow. I think I know what the problem is but am not sure how to fix it.

He did not secure the computer properly with antivirus software (don't worry...I am using another computer) and I think that there is a virus.

I have tried loading various sotware such as F-secure, AdZone and macafee. Every tme I try to load some antivirus software it crashes. I cant copy the files onto the cd as it comes up with an error message.

please please advise :confused: :confused:
