Hello, my dad has a really, really, REALLY, crappy HP computer that is performing so horrible that I am thinking about doing a fresh reinstall of XP. Howeverm there are lots of files on that hard drive that I would like to backup so I was wondering if I could plug the Hard drive for my dad's computer into my computer then copy over the files I want to keep.. I would only copy files I am familiar with and I would scan everything with kaspersky before transferring. The thing is, I am worried that what ever is wrong with my dad's computer will automatically transfer over to my computer.. Is that a possibility for infections on my dad's hard drive to spread to my hard drive automatically? My computer is only 2 months old and cost me a bit of money so I obviously don't want to get my PC infected just to fix my dad's crappy HP computer.
I was also thinking maybe I should post a hijackthis log of his computer to see if someone could help me fix the problems. I don't even have a fresh copy of XP to put on his computer, just the HP recovery discs.
Some of the stuff my dad's computer is doing involves:
-Windows Update, System Restore, Search, Help, and User Settings all show up as blank pages (I have tried following Microsofts online help to try and solve this but nothing has worked so far).
-I just recently installed Kaspersky security on his computer (To replace AVG and Commodo) and everytime the PC starts Kaspersky freezes and then the computer runs so slow I can't do anything with it. I can start the PC in safe mode though so I could always uninstall Kaspersky then get a hijackthis log.
-Computer takes about 2-3 minutes to shutdown
-Windows Media Player will no longer work and displays an error message about some jscript.dll thing.
-I tried to install Adobe photoshop on my dad's computer and it also displayed an error about jscript.dll
So, should I just post a hijackthis log first? I really don't want my PC to get infected too.
EDIT: I ran the SFC /SCANNOW Command and it found some errors although I could not fix the problems because it asked me to insert Windows XP Pro Disc 2. I do not have a XP disc 2. It did have some errors that asked for XP Disc 1 and I did have that disc handy so I assume some errors were fixed. I tried running ccleaner and it eventually stopped responding.
